This collection overriding inspiration is shakkei, an ancient principle native to Asian architecture and landscape design. Roughly translated as “borrowed scenery,” the term refers to precisely-placed architectural elements and their relationship with their natural surroundings. Shakkei advocates placement, sensitivity, and harmony in the built environment, which is also an expression of our hopes for this collection.
Frame of Reference is comprised of three distinct patterns—Portal, Threshold, and Transom—in 12 shared colorways. Evoking the principals of shakkei, the patterns suggest organic motifs inside subtle, orderly frames.
