In "Contemporary Art 2", Caughey and Gow wrote "Throughout his long career, Frizzell has demonstrated an abundance of natural talent. He can apply diverse skills to many media moving easily from pencil on paper to oil or enamel paint...". This now also includes the textile world with Dilana's 100% NZ wool rugs.

Caughey and Gow noted further how "Frizzell has mastered almost every style - naive, cubist, abstract, and realist included. Not caring for the intellectualisation of 'high art' and often championing the cause of 'low art', Frizzell has positioned himself between the two, retaining the freedom to cross boundaries as he pleases".

This is clearly seen in the rugs. Frizzell says he manages "to get into 'rug-mode'... after a big burst of painting usually... I take the notion of 'Applied Art' very literally... I scope large and wide through all my favourite art references... and APPLY bits and pieces from what ever catches my 'rug-eye'.

"I make quick little scamps... never lingering long over any one reference... so the ideas mutate somehow into this new thing... mostly due to the failure of memory! An interesting process... which requires no formal links between one design and the next... as each one represents a different idea."
