We have created a global first with this rug by trademarking a glitter foil thread that is woven into Midnight Garden that can at once reflect the night skies but also the very natural way we encounter glitter in nature. This foil captures the night's dew and imbues the rug with the softness of darkness.

“Botanicals are another genealogical marker for me, firstly through the patterns of my

maternal grandmother who I could only meet through the patterning of the fabrics she wore in photos, patterns that are organic and fluid in nature and adept as memory cues variously drawn from party dresses. With the personal particularity of them being from the lives of the extended Paterson family they unify an amalgam of parts, sources and references to ultimately reveal and contain their own independent genealogy”.

Hand knotted and spun in deep blue hues, the garden is illuminated to reference where we may find glitter and reflection within a garden at night. Lit by a radiant moon, this glitter thread is at once the water dew glistening over proud blooms reflecting the softness of night, and the stars trapped in reflection.

The collection places our participation on the rugs as a bridge between the up, and the

down, between the land and sea, and everything we traverse within them. In Māori terms

these designs are the heroic passage of whakapapa on a journey to the primeval parents of Ranginui the sky father and Papatuanuku, the Earth Mother.
